Abstract
The purpose of this study is to compare vowel length, vowel quality, and duration ratio of stressed vowels and unstressed vowels in American students’ and Korean students’ pronunciations through sound experimental analyses. In the result of length comparison, Koreans’ pronunciations appear to be much longer than Americans’ in Tense and Lax vowels. In a comparison of Formants 1 and 2, which reflect structures of vowel quality, Koreans show a greater difference in F1/ F2 distribution than Americans in High Front and Back Lax vowels, which consequently demonstrates that Koreans do not discriminate well in their pronunciations of Tense and Lax vowels. In a ratio comparison of duration, when stress falls on vowels, Korean speakers pronounce much longer than Americans in High Front Tense and Lax vowels, while in High Back Tense and Lax vowels, conversely, Koreans’ pronunciation is shorter than Americans’. Also, ratio comparisons of S (stressed vowels) to W (unstressed vowels) in experimental words, as well as a comparison of length and Formant, show that, except for some exceptional cases, Koreans pronounced the S parts shorter than Americans, while they pronounced the W parts longer than Americans.
