Abstract

This paper seeks to answer the question of why many Koreans, as foreign learners of English, cannot reach a native level of English pronunciation even after tens of years of English learning. This paper will examine the causes of mispronunciation by Korean learners of English and offer means to improve proper pronunciation of English. There are essentially three areas to examine when considering the mispronunciation by Korean learners of English. Firstly, the Korean phonological system is different from that of English. This handicaps Korean learners when they pronounce English vowels and consonants. Secondly, poor and incomplete transmission of Korean sounds to native Korean learners by teachers causes mispronunciation of several English consonants and vowels. This can be corrected if a proper education of Korean sounds was implemented. Finally, relations and similarities between Korean sounds and their corresponding English counterparts are overlooked despite being a fairly important factor for explaining the pronunciation of some English sounds. If they are pointed out and explained by teachers, the learner's mispronunciation of English will be reduced. The paper concludes with several solutions for the improvement of English pronunciation by Korean learners of English: a substantial emphasis on the education of the Korean phonological system to teachers of Korean; the development of superb Korean pronunciation textbooks and multimedia materials; and the reinforcement of English pronunciation education through a comparative approach, underlining the similarities between corresponding Korean and English sounds.
