초록
This paper examines flaps occurring in word-medial position in American English. A study of two speech corpora, one a conversational speech corpus (the Buckeye Speech Corpus) and the other a read speech corpus (TIMIT), reveals that flapping occurs nearly categorically between a stressed and an unstressed vowel but optionally between two unstressed vowels, and that its occurrence is influenced by lexical usage frequency. I will attempt an Optimality Theoretic analysis of optional flapping, employing Coetzee’s (2008) proposal based on lexically specified constraints. I will show that quantitative information about optional flapping obtained from the corpus study can be successfully modeled by adopting Coetzee’s analysis, where variation and usage frequency are addressed simultaneously by variable lexical indexation associated with a probabilistic distribution function.
