Abstract

Oh Cheongchwi-dang (1704〜1732) was a female poet who lived a short life of 29 years. She became known to the academic world as one of the female literati of the Hoseo region through her life, family lineage, and the 182 Korean poems included in the manuscript collection Cheongchwi-dang-jip that had been passed down within her family. However, more detailed research has not been conducted on the primary emotional tone and consciousness patterns in Oh Cheongchwi-dang's Korean poetry. This study focuses on the aesthetic characteristics of the Daoist coloring that permeates Oh Cheongchwi-dang's entire body of Korean poetry to establish her literary-historical significance, and seeks to examine the background that led to the creation of such poetry works and their value in the history of Korean poetry. Oh Cheongchwi-dang's Korean poetry contains aspects of yuseон (wandering in the immortal realm) where she expresses myths of the immortal world while gazing at the moon or roams in the celestial realm through dreams, and directly depicts myths and historical figures of the immortal world, yeondан (elixir refinement), and seonchwi (immortal interests). Above all, she expressed herself as a 'jeogseon' (banished immortal) exiled from the immortal world to the mundane world, aspiring for gwiseon (return to immortality) - wishing to return to the immortal realm after briefly staying in this world. There are also many references to cosmic phenomena such as the moon, stars, rainbows, thunder and lightning, the four seasons, and the six atmospheric conditions. This study analyzes poetry works following the progression of "moon → dream → immortal transformation" and examines: 1. Images of the moon and Daoist imagination 2. Transcendence of reality through dreams and experience of the immortal realm 3. Longing for immortals and the immortal transformation of the self. Oh Cheongchwi-dang's yuseон poetry not only borrowed Daoist myths and immortal-related terminology at the material level of Korean poetry, but also embodied an active immortal realm in her works as an ideal world contrasting with the suffering of reality, possessing literary value with original and profound philosophical depth. Her poetic world vividly demonstrates introspection and enlightenment through adversity, literary sublimation of the immortal realm, and a magnanimous and bold spirit, establishing a unique position that inherits the tradition of Heo Nanseolheon's yuseон poetry.
