Abstract
This paper aims to provide an analysis of why the opposition won a landslide victory and the incumbency failed to succeed. Mr Lee won a thumping endorsement, securing close to 50% of the vote in a 12-man presidential field. His margin over the government party’s candidate is over than 3.3 million votes, A landslide victory may signal the beginning of fundamental changes in the party system of Korea. the largest one since the first presidential election in 1952. Fundamental changes include a profound shift from liberal regime to conservative one. In a word, it is a sharp right turn. Conservative rule has prevailed Korean politics except last decade. No liberal regime had not succeed in capturing the presidency until the 1997 election when Kim Dae-jung became elected. Magnitude of electoral margin gained by the opposition demonstrates and reconfirms how strong and solid conservative rule in this country. I argue that liberal forces have to depend on electoral reforms to challenge conservative rule and regain government in next elections. Liberals has to commit themselves to change electoral system from plurality or first past the post(FPP) systems to proportional representation systems. Proportional representation rules are more likely to produce larger redistributive policies than a marjoritarian system. Redstributive policies help liberal parties to gain electoral fortunes with the return of large groups like workers, the poor, pensioners, etc, to support liberal parties.
