Abstract

Recently Internet of Things(IoT) called disruptive innovation has been an issue, it has a lot of interest in many research areas. This paper investigates about the trends and characteristics of works of art based on the Internet of Things in the art. In order to appreciate the latest IoT-based Art, this paper looks into the Networked Art category of 2013/2014 Internet of Things Awards organized by Postscapes, Internet of Things analysis agency. Investigating all nine works by theme, media, interaction, etc, classifying them into the Internet of Things technology development stage and interactivity with users, and figuring out their characteristics. There are still plenty of telepresence works of M2M concepts and IoT works to connect to the physical world. In recent years, communication-based interaction works using SNS, mobile network have been in the limelight. In IoT-based Art, interactivity around the audience and the media is very various. This survey shows that audience of four works among total nine works interactively participated and instantly experienced the results from their actions. The noticeable characteristics of IoT-based Art are mixed reality, connecting people, telepresence, connecting to the physical world, etc. If things connected to the Internet have increased progressively in the future, more complex and various IoT-based Art will emerge.
