Abstract

Advancements in media technology have transformed the ways users experience the visual art. Among these changes, interactive art has emerged as a fusion of technology, art, and design, offering innovative forms of audience participation. Through unique interface mechanisms, interactive art reshapes how audiences experience works, enabling not only interaction between the audience and the artwork but also fostering communication among viewers. This dual-layered interaction creates new roles for audiences and encourages collective participation. To establish deeper connections beyond visual experiences, interactive art must create relational dynamics within the work itself. Designing participatory experiences requires considering the audience's role and their interaction with the content. This paper examines two key aspects of interactive art: the autonomy of interaction and the relational dynamics among viewers. It categorizes participatory methods into four distinct types, based on the levels of interaction autonomy—high or low—and the scale of audience participation, whether individual or collective. The analysis highlights the characteristics of each category, focusing especially on artworks with the relationship in the characteristics of high autonomy and collective participation. These types of interactive art guide audiences through stages of contemplation, exploration, action, and creation, enabling dynamic role transitions and fostering deeper engagement. While this study acknowledges limitations, such as insufficient psychological analysis of individual viewers, it emphasizes the role of interactive art in providing meaningful and collaborative experiences. It serves as foundational research for creating collaborative and multi-participants artworks that provides active experiences. In the digital transformation era, this study underscores how interactive artworks can facilitate simultaneous multi-user interactions, and might be illustrated its evolving potential in media-driven communication and audience collaboration.
