Abstract
The role of the product designer in the industrial society has been the development of a product shape that is required during the final stage of the product development. However, the role of the designer in the information society has been expanded to meet the needs of user’s experience as well as the users' needs for the functional purpose. The most common and efficient design tool for improving the user experience and usability is prototyping. However, as opposed to these social needs, the role of prototyping in higher education is becoming more and more reduced. In situations where the expanding importance of user experience in modern product design, use of a prototype may have to be further expanded than levels that were conducted in the past product design studio class. To do this, first, I researched prototypes literature and defined the concept and role of the prototyping. And analysis was conducted in a studio class of university and examined the pros and cons. After that, product design studio class was proposed and the efficacy was judged through applying it to real classes. Through this, the effectiveness of the proposed class was concluded into three. The first is to cultivate the logical problem-solving skills through the accumulation of prototyping experience. The second is to improve the ability to insight into the interaction between the functional elements, form factors, and the user's experiential element of the product. The third is for students themselves to logically apply usability and user’s experience to the product design and have ability to determine the form of the product. Through transforming the existing studio class to the studio class focused on prototyping to meet the contemporary flow of user experience, students can understand the relationship between the user and the product and experience the real dimension of the problem with the product.
