본 연구의 목적은 모더니즘 디자인 형성에 영향을 미친 르 꼬르뷔지에를 예술적, 사회적, 문화적 배경과 관점으로 살펴보고, 이와 디자인사가들의 주장을 비교, 새로운 해석을 도출하여 디자인사에 대한 새로운 관점과 해석의 필요성을 드러내는 데 있다. 디자인사가들은 르 꼬르뷔지에가 ‘기계미학과 기하학’, ‘민주적 접근’, ‘문화 엘리트적’ 등의 개념등과 관련이 있다고 해석했다. 이러한 주장을 기본으로, 연구 프로세스는 다음과 같다. 1) 1920년대 르 꼬르뷔지에에 대해 예술사적 배경과 예술사가들의 관점, 사회사적 배경과 역사가들의 관점, 문화사적 배경과 역사가들의 관점을 차례로 조망한다. 2) 디자인사가들의 해석과 예술사가, 역사가들의 관점의 차이를 비교한다. 3) 르 꼬르뷔지에에 대한 다양한 해석을 도출한다. 예술적 관점에서 본다면, 르 꼬르뷔지에의 기계미학과 기하학은 동시대 미술과 건축 분야에서 팽배했던 현상이었으며, 입체주의의 영향을 받은 르 꼬르뷔지에의 기계미학이 급진적이지 않을 수 있다는 해석이 가능하다. 사회적 관점에서는 그의 성향을 민주적이라고 말할 수 없다는 것을, 문화적 관점에서는 그의 성향이 엘리트적이었을 가능성이 있다는 해석을 도출할 수 있다. 이러한 해석들을 기반으로, 그의 작품이 예술적, 양식적으로 모더니즘에 속한다 하더라도, 그가 사회적이나 문화적인 측면에서는 보편적인 ‘모더니스트’에 속하지 않을 수 있다는 사실을 유추할 수 있다. 이와 같이, 기존 디자인사에 대한 새로운 관점들과 해석들은 디자인에 대한 다양한 프레임 구축에 일조할 것이다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is for revealing needs of new perspectives and interpretations about Design history by researching backgrounds and viewpoints of art, society, culture about 1920's Le Corbusier and comparing viewpoints of Design historians and others. Design historians argued that Le Corbusier was related to 'mechanical aesthetics and geometry', 'democratic approach', 'cultural elitist'. Based on this, the study process is as below. 1) Research the backgrounds and viewpoints of art, social, culture about 1920's Le Corbusier, 2) Compare design and external viewpoints, 3) Derive various different interpretations. In artistic perspective, 'mechanical aesthetics and geometry' was a prevalent phenomenon in the field of art and architecture and it seems improbable that 'mechanical aesthetic' affected by Cubism was radical. In social perspective, it is scarcely possible to say that Le corbusier's attitude was democratic. In cultural perspective, his tendency was elitist. Based on the interpretations stated above, it can be inferred that he didn't belong to 'Modernist' in social, cultural aspect, even if his works fell into the category of 'Modernism' art style. As like this, new viewpoints and interpretations about old design history would help build various frame for design.
