체코 큐비즘에서의 장식성 연구 -건축, 디자인, 공예를 중심으로-

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine how the decorative features of Czech cubism were pursued and developed in the applied arts such as architecture, design and crafts apart from fine art. Cubist styles originating from Western Europe in the early 20th century influenced a lot of artists, and led to its unique forms of expression in Czech. Czech cubists actively implemented their distinct cubist style in applied arts and grew apart from its West European counterpart. It can be found that they tried to express decorative forms of cubism in different parts of Czech Republic. Czech cubism has forms of novel expression that can only be found in the Czech Republic, and provides a good example of the unique decorativeness of cubism in applied arts. The method of this study explores how cubist forms, with its roots in Western Europe, influenced applied arts as it moved its way to the Czech Republic, and summarizes the timeline of Czech cubism. Also, this study examines interrelation between cubism and decoration in applied arts, and analyzes how decorativeness of Czech cubism is expressed. On the basis of this, the visual characteristics of Czech cubism are analyzed through examples of three fields: design, crafts and architecture. As a result, it can be seen that cubism was decoratively expressed in applied arts of Czech and found cases where such forms is expressed to various areas in modern design and crafts. It is evident that the Czech's unique decorative expression, though not yet widely recognized in Korea, has heavily influenced contemporary applied arts. Therefore, analyzing the decorativeness of Czech cubism will help to understand the characteristics of modern cubist expression, and prospectively aid in rediscovering the meaning of decoration. Furthermore, this research can be an opportunity for decorative meaning in applied arts to develop both visually and conceptually.
