변증법적 디자인 방법으로서 동서 문화의 조형적 표현에 관한 연구 - 20세기 그래픽 디자인에 나타난 통합, 화합, 융합 사례를 중심으로

본 연구는 동서 문화의 수렴적 관점에서 동양과 서양이 서로 만나 변증법적 과정을 통해 합(合)을 이룬 결과의3가지 양상에 대해 추적하였다. 그 결과로서 3가지 합(合)의 양상은 통합(統合), 화합(和合), 융합(融合)으로 정리하였다. 연구 방법은 문헌연구를 통해 변증법에 관한 이론적 배경과 선행연구를 고찰한 후, 용어의 정확한 이해를 위해 사전적 정의를 비교·분석하였다. 연구 범위는 20세기 그래픽 디자인으로서 동양과 서양의 문화가 수렴된 조형적 표현으로 한정하였다. 연구결과 첫째, 통합(統合)은 동양과 서양의 문화가 공존하는 ‘크로스컬츄럴디자인(cross-cultural design)’의 특성을 보였다. 둘째, 화합(和合)은 동양의 정신과 서양의 기술이 조화를 이룬 ‘문화적 정체성 디자인(cultural identity design)’의 특성을 보였다. 셋째, 융합(融合)은 동양과 서양의 문화적 경계를 뛰어넘는 ‘초국가적 디자인(transnational design)’으로서 국제적 스타일의 보편적 디자인으로, 추상적이고 기하학적인 기초 조형의 표현을 하였다. 그렇다면, 동서 문화의 수렴에 대해 활발히 논의되고 있는 현상황에서 디자인은 어떤 방향으로 나아가야 하는가? 변증법적 디자인 방법을 통해 동양과 서양의 가치를 통합하고, 조화롭게 화합하며, 서로의 장점을 융합하여, 제3의 디자인 세계를 열어가야 한다. 그러기 위해서는 디자이너의 문화적 소양(cultural literacy)이 필요한 시점이며, 이를 후속 연구로 남기고자 한다.
Abstract
This study traced the three patterns of outcomes in the meeting of East and West from the convergence perspective of Eastern and Western cultures and their combination in a dialectic manner. The three patterns of their combination as the outcomes were arranged in integration, harmony, and fusion. As for methodology, the investigator examined theoretical backgrounds and previous studies on dialectics through literature study and compared and analyzed the definitions of terms in the dictionary for their accurate understanding. The research scope was limited to formative expressions in which Eastern and Western cultures converged as graphic designs of the 20th century. The findings were as follows: first, integration showed the characteristics of cross-cultural design in which both Eastern and Western cultures coexisted; second, harmony exhibited the characteristics of cultural identity design in which Oriental spirit stroke harmony with Occidental technology; and finally, fusion displayed transnational design beyond the boundary between Eastern and Western cultures and universal design in international styles, providing basic abstract and geometric formative expressions. In what direction should design move forward in the current situation where there are active discussions about the convergence of Eastern and Western cultures? A dialectic design method should be used to integrate Eastern and Western values, achieve harmonious harmony between them and fusion of their advantages, and open up a third design world. These require cultural literacy from designers and should be addressed in, follow-up study.
