해외 주요 간행물에 나타난 지역연구로서의 한국관련 디자인 연구의 경향 - 세계화와 지역화의 관점에서 한국디자인 정체성담론의 방향성 고찰 -

연구배경 본 연구에서는 해외 주요 일간지와 학술지에 나타난 지역연구로서의 한국디자인 연구의 경향을 알아보는 것을 일차적 목표로 하며, 이를 통해 세계화와 지역화의 관점에서 한국디자인의 정체성 담론의 방향성을 고찰해보고자 하였다. 연구방법 먼저 한국디자인사에서 전통과 정체성에 관한 담론들을 살펴보고, 이들의 한계점을 논의해본다. 그리고 해외로 눈을 돌려 세계 속에서 지역디자인과 국가디자인의 서사에 대해 조사를 하고, 최근의 지역디자인 담론의 경향에 대해서도 살펴본다. 그리고 최근 6년간 해외 주요매체와 학술지에 거론되는 한국디자인에 대한 기사와 연구의 내용과 경향을 정리 분석한다. 연구결과 전체기사 중 한국문화예술 관련 국내외 행사나 전시회 소식을 알리기 위한 기사들이 가장 많았다. 관련 전문가에 의한 전문성을 갖춘 기사는 2개 정도가 있었다. 대체로 한국문화에 대한 가벼운 내용을 다룬 기사가 대부분이었다. 해외 우수학술지에 실린 한국디자인 관련 논문들은 10편 밖에 없었고, 모두 한국인 연구자들이 논문의 저자들이었다는 점이 특이했다. 이를 미루어 아직까지 한국디자인에 대한 외국인 전문 연구가는 없는 것으로 여겨진다. 이 연구들은 해외에 한국디자인을 적극적으로 알리는 도구로서의 역할을 하고 있다. 결론 해외연구자들의 시각을 이해해보고자 하는 본 연구의 목적은 이루지 못했지만, 국내디자인 연구자들이 앞으로 세계와 소통하며 한국디자인 담론을 생성해나가야 할 것이라는 방향성을 찾을 수 있었다. 본 연구는 해외에서 한국 관련 디자인 연구의 현황을 조사 분석하여 세계적 지역적 관점에서 한국디자인의 정체성 담론의 방향성을 모색해본 것에 의의를 두며, 이를 계기로 초국가적 관점에서의 한국디자인 담론이 전 세계적으로 활발하게 확산되길 기대한다.
Abstract
Background The primary goal of this study is to examine trends in Korean design studies as a regional study in major foreign media and academic journals; and to examine the direction of the discourse of Korean design identity in terms of globalization and localization. Methods Firstly, the discourses on tradition and identity within Korean design were examined and their limitations were discussed. Subsequently, narratives of regional and national design in the world were investigated; as well as recent trends of regional design discourses. The articles and researches regarding Korean design which were mentioned in major overseas media and journals within the last six years were analyzed. Result Most articles introduced Korean design and arts related events and exhibitions. Other articles introduced Korean traditional culture and other innovative products. Majority of articles were rather light descriptions of Korean culture. There were only ten articles related to Korean design that had been published in acclaimed journals. Interestingly, all of these articles were written by Korean researchers. As a result, it seems that there are no foreign researchers on Korean design yet. These have been acting as a tool to actively promote Korean culture abroad. Conclusion The purpose of this study is to investigate the current situation of design research related to Korea from abroad and to examine the direction of discourse of identity of Korean design from a global and regional viewpoint. It is expected that the discourse of Korean design from the transnational perspective will be actively spread around the world.
