병산서원에 나타난 현상학적 공간 특성 연구

Abstract

Byeongsan Seowon is the representative one of the kind in Korea, built to pay tribute to Ryu, Seong-Ryong, the best disciple of Lee, Hwang and mid-progenitor of Pungsan Ryu family. This study derives pheonomenolgical space characteristics of Byeongsan Seowon by analyzing visual characteristics as phenomenological space elements and evaluating their interactions. We analyzed space characteristics of Byeongsan Seowon in terms of its functionality, which are education and commemoration. We suggest a novel framework to achieve objectiveness in phenomenological analysis of the spaces within Byeongsan Seowon. This framework also allowed us to grasp relations of phenomenological visual perceptions of the spaces within Byeongsan Seowon. We examined architectural characteristics and elements of Byeongsan Seowon, and applied phenomenology. Here we analyzed the phenomenological space characteristics in terms of extension, appearance and disappearance, experience and consciousness, and put each results together to define the space characteristics of Byeongsan Seowon with languages of objectivity, projection, association, relation, subjectivity, variability, unity, representation and symbolization. Our study reveals the phenomenological space characteristics of Byeondsan Seowon, one of Korean traditional architectures that are not acknowledged much compared to modern ones. We suggest that more studies be conducted with other Seowon architectures to unearth their essential space characteristics, giving more substantial understanding of such traditional architectures.
