본 연구는 전통도자공예에 대한 성찰에서 출발한다. 이 논문은 완성된 결과물로서의 도자작품으로서보다는, 현대도자예술에서의 시대성과 심미화의 문제를 ‘프로세스’에 관한 논점에서 접근해보고자 하였다. 즉 도자예술의완성된 작품이 지니는 형태미와 그 기본 매체인 흙 사이의 문맥을 연구의 본문에서 고찰함으로써, 도자예술에서의 프로세스를 논하는 동시에 그 예술적 가치를 탐구하였다. 본 연구는 도자전공자로서 연구자의 작품에 초점을 맞추었지만, 몇 가지의 선별한 작품만을 평가하고자 하는 것이 아니다. 연구자의 도예 작업 안에서 전통매체로서 흙/점토의 무형적 특성이 현대미술에 자리한 프로세스아트를 새롭게 이해할 기준이자 프로세스가 예술적 가치로 거듭나는데 중점을 두었다. 연구자는 오랜 기간 동안전통도자예술에서 프로세스의 가능성을 탐미해왔지만, 본 논문에서는 2013-2015년 사이에 제작되고 전시된작품만을 연구의 대상으로 제한하였다. 이 시기에 제작되고 전시된 작품들이 특히 프로세스에 초점을 맞춘 것이자, 이를 예술적 가치로 전환하고자 실험한 작품들이기 때문이다. 본 연구는 현대미술에서 프로세스의 미학적 담론이 도자예술에서 프로세스의 예술적 가치로 전환되는 문맥을분석하고, 도자기가 흙으로 완성된 형태 이전에 제작자에게 있어서 내면적 세계와의 만남, 그리고 정신세계 표출의 토대로서 그 과정이 예술적 행위이자 가치가 있음을 주장한다. 인간의 형태를 지녔음에도 불구하고 미완적이고, 상상에서나 그려진 형태, 각기 다른 오브제가 결합되어 한데 어울려 군집을 이룬 이 기록물들은, 자아의정체성을 찾아가는 과정이자 현대사회의 단편이기도 하다. 본 연구는 도자예술에서 프로세스에 대한 올바른 인식을 제안하여 자아 탐구가 마침내 예술적 가치로 거듭나는것을 쟁점화 하였다. 도자예술에서의 자아의 정체성 확립은 창작의 행위이자 예술적 가치를 구현하는 방법이다. 창작의 행위가 현대미술에서 다변화되고 있듯이, 도자예술에서 프로세스에 대한 미학적 담론이 형성되는데 기여하고자 한다.
Abstract
This thesis starts from the introspection of traditional Ceramic art. In this thesis, the issue of zeitgeist and esthetics in the modern ceramic art will be discussed with the ceramic not as a completed progeny, but as a being in the process. I will mention the process and explore the artistic value at the same time in the main body by studying the context between the formal beauty derived from the completed works and earth as basic medium. Although this study focuses on the work of a researcher as a ceramicist, it is not intended to evaluate only a few selected works. Rather, I emphasize on a standard that renders the intangible property of earth as traditional medium into the modern art and the process becomes anew based on my works. I have been pursuing the possibility of the process in ceramic art for a long time, however I confined only the works that were made and displayed during 2013-2015 as subject in this thesis for they are experimental works that especially focus on the process and convert to the artistic value. The artistic value of the process in the manufacture so far as modern ceramic art is not extraordinary at all. In this study, I will analyze the context of how the esthetic discourse of the process in modern art converts into the artistic value in ceramic art. Before a pottery is completed with earth, the manufacturer will confront with his or her internal world and the process as a basis of expressing manufacturer’s spiritual world is the art itself and very meaningful. Though the work has human figure, the deformed, unfinished and incomplete is the record of the process that is in pursuit of the self-identity and one fragment of modern society. Establishing a self -identity in ceramic art enables us communicate with others as a member of society and it will be realized as an artistic value in the end. As the act of creation is accepted in diversified genre, so I long to contribute to the aesthetic discourse of the process in the ceramic arts.
