Abstract

A clown is a character who has had a profound influence on anthropology, drama, humanities, popular culture and its symbolic clothing continues to influence modern fashion. However, there is not much research on clowns. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to confirm the influence of expression characteristics and semantic interpretation of the image of a clown in modern fashion and to systematically categorize it. As a research method, a theoretical system was created through domestic and foreign professional books related to clowns, research papers in related fields, and data from reliable internet sites, focusing on Vogue and Elle sites from 2000 to 2020. Result of the study is, firstly, the expressive characteristics of image of clowns were classified into playfulness, double-meaning, demonicity, and decadence. Playfulness appeared as exaggeration, reduction, and distortion of clothing and body, disharmonious combinations of disparate items, metaphorical politics and social satirical messages, bizarre walking and esoteric performances, playful sexual allusions. Double-meaning is mainly composed of ego and symbolic self-shaping through split face makeup and headgear made of avant-garde materials, genderless representation, mixing of heterogeneous elements, and conflicting ambivalent emotions. The demonic nature is a hybrid image that is combined with an animal with an ominous image, creating a sense of fear through aggressive items and the form of death, surprising performances and melody that gives thrill and shock. Decadence is characterized by the wearing of sadistic items and the exposure of the body, phrases and actions that promote social debauchery, and the expression of a mad antisocial character. The meaning of this clown image was interpreted as the overthrowing of moral codes and social conventions, and the liberation of the suppressed human mind and emotions. The result of this thesis is a comprehensive summary of clowns’ history and how it has developed in popular culture. This research is meaningful as it reveals that clowns can be used as a material for conveying meaningful fashion messages and expandable material reflecting the emotions and aesthetics of modern fashion designers.
