사실주의 그림책에 재현된 폭력의 그림텍스트 의미작용 -분노단계에 따른 그림책 사례를 중심으로-

Abstract

As social picture books that cover problems of the real world are being increasingly published, this study seeks to examine the signification appearing in social realism picture books, particularly those addressing domestic violence, by classifying images into anger stages. As an analysis method, two realistic picture books are selected, and the main images are classified according to the different stages of anger based on the narrations in these picture books. The semantic structure of images visualized based on semiotics is also analyzed. The results are as follows. First, as anger is processed, symbolic elements such as anger, tension, potential, hope, and therapy are used as important visual devices that lead narration. Second, in both cases, colors are important components in the semantic structure of the different characters’ mental state and emotions. Third, in delivering the fear and panic of violence, an “Angry Man” focuses on dimension and expression of action, whereas “Dad’s Drinking Buddy” focuses on tone and expression techniques. Fourth, the “father” is applied according to the stages of anger through the change of maximized sizes. The size can be considered as a component that reflects the change in a character’s status and approval within the family. Fifth, while “Angry Man” focuses on the change in emotions of the father, who is the subject of violence, “Dad’s Drinking Buddy” forms a semantic structure based on other family members’ emotions. In the narrative centered on violence, realistic expressions and symbolic elements were emphasized in the picture text, whereas when the focus was the victim of violence, the depth of psychological and emotional wounds was reproduced through color, line, and expression techniques to form a mythical meaning of the modern family. The picture book images, which visualize violence, are meaningful in that they capture the experiences and the lives of others, and provide consideration for real problems. They are not only for child readers but also for adults.
