본 연구는 연구자의 ‘세로내리기 기법’을 가스통 바슐라르(1884-1962)의 상상력에 대한 현상학적 이미지론으로 재해석하여, 이 세로선의 질료적 이미지가 몽상의 도구로써 갖는 가능성을 확인하는 것을목적으로 한다. 연구 방법은 보편적 감성을 유도하는 가장 원초적 공간인 ‘집’에서도 몽상에 가장 특화된 ‘내 집’의 특정 장소에 내포된 내밀한 이미지를 표현하기 위해, ‘세로내리기 기법’을 이용해 내 방의구석, 문과 창문, 그리고 내 방이라는 소재와 연결하여 결과물을 제시하는 것이다. 시각적 이미지가 범람하는 현대사회에서 일방적인 이미지는 몽상하는 기회를 앗아간다. 연구자는 이러한 상황에서 예술이 인간에게 상상력을 복원할 수 있는 역할을 할 방법에 관해 관심을 두게 되었다. 이 과정에서 바슐라르의 <공간의 시학>에서 주장하는 현상학적 접근으로, 상상력 이미지가 몽상의 힘을 끌어내는 예술이라는 것에 주목하게 되었다. 연구자는 재료와 기법을 이용한 질료적 이미지로 ‘세로내리기’를 실험하고, 이 기법이 몽상의 힘을 끌어내는 도구가 될 수 있는 가능성을 살펴본다. 연구 내용은 먼저 바슐라르의 상상력의 현상학적 접근으로 ‘집’안의 내밀한 몽상의 힘을 가진 장소를 선별하고, 그에 대한중심어를 추출한 후, 이 중심어에 나타나는 이미지를 기반으로 세로선을 도출하는 것이다. 이를 위한세로내리기 실험은 안료, 실, 철가루, 자개 가루 등의 질료적 다양성에서 나타나는 이미지를 기반으로한다. 연구 결과로, 이 선들의 질료적 특징으로 몽상의 공간을 제시하여, 세로내리기 기법이 상상력의현상학적 도구로써의 가능성을 확인하였다. 향 후, 이렇게 질료화한 이미지가 몽상의 매개체가 되는도구의 역할을 확장하도록 연구를 지속할 것이다.
Abstract
This study reinterprets the researcher’s ‘vertical down technique’ as a phenomenological image theory for the thoughts of philosopher Gaston Bachelard (1884-1962), and confirms the possibility that the image of this vertical line has, as a tool for dreaming. My ‘vertical line signature’ was used in order to express the intimate image contained in the specific place of ‘the house’ from Gaston Bachelard’s book, <The Poetics of Space>,’ in which he says ‘the house shelters daydreaming, the house protects the dreamer, the house allows one to dream in peace’. it is the most ideal spot for daydreaming and the most fundamental space that induces universal emotions and sentiments. The result is presented in connection with the corners of the room, doors and windows, and the subject matter of my room. The world today, teeming with inescapable images has taken away the opportunity for us to dream in a modern society. I started getting interested in how art might play a role in restoring the imagination in humans in this context. In this process, I noticed that it is an art that draws out the power of human dreams from imagined images. I experimented with my ‘vertical line signature’ using a physical image utilising assorted materials and techniques, and would like to examine the potential of this technique as a tool to draw out the power of daydreaming. At first, places with the power of private dreams are selected with the key concepts from Bachelard’s ‘house’ as inspiration. Following the process, the vertical line experiment was done based on the image that appears in the key concept. The descending vertical experiment is based on images displaying different physical properties using pigment, thread, iron powder, and mother-of pearl powders. Using the physical characteristics of the lines, I presented the spaces of a dream, and I examined the possibility of a phenomenological approach of imagination through these images. For future research, I will continue to expand the role of this physical image as a tool of daydreaming.
