Abstract

This study started from the question of how the term ‘JOHYUNG’ was used in visual arts and, although it is an old term, can it respond to the contemporary trend. To find this answer, we tried to understand the meaning of the term ‘JOHYUNG’ by looking for examples in history. Researching the examples, the term ‘JOHYUNG’ appeared in the development of the Japanese avant-garde movement around 1925, and is a term adopted to capture the new feeling of life and lifestyle of 'modern'. Modernity in visual arts in Korea was accepted by the first generation who studied in Japan, and among them, Chanyoung Kim was a considerable theorist who tried to explain the new sense while supporting the orientation of objectivity and the tendency of Cubism. Bokjin Kim paid attention to the Japanese avant-garde trend in the Taisho period with a contemporary sense, and especially introduced advertising paintings reflecting the capitalist culture of large cities with a cutting-edge sense. Yongjun Kim introduces the term ‘JOHYUNG’ in the opposite direction, considering academism as outdated. In this context, the term 'JOHYUNG' is an avant-garde term that denies the established art concept and reflects realization, urbanization, and practicalization (industrialization) in visual arts with a contemporary sensibility, and is a term that embodies a modern sense of subjectivity and freedom. Therefore, the term ‘JOHYUNG’ is a new art term that appeared in the development of modernism as a product of modernity, and it can be said that it is a term that deeply studied urban culture as the spirit of the times, modernity, and the sense of hign technology.
