가상현실 속에서의 시간성 표현 연구: <성학십도 VR>의 <숙흥야매잠도 VR> 편을 중심으로

Abstract

The book Sunghaksipdo in Joseon dynasty contains ten diagrams that humans need to study. <Sunghaksipdo VR> project is a virtual reality work that has reinterpreted Sunghaksipdo in a contemporary way. This study discusses about <Sookheungyamaejam-do VR>, which produced based on the 10th diagram 「Sookheungyamaejam-do」, particularly through the perspective of temporality. Time is generally thought of as something that is linear and flows in one direction. But in the fields of science and philosophy, various concepts of time have been explored. They have approached it in an abstract way, for example, time is repeated in cyclic way, or eternally. Also, there were various efforts to try different temporal expressions in numerous artworks. 「Sookheungyamaejam-do」 emphasizes the performance of body and mind in the pursuit of ‘Gyung.’ It should be continued from the morning, lunch, to evening. This unfolding time of morning-lunch-evening shows Chronos’ linear time. But simultaneously, it also includes Kairos’ approach from the momentary achievement of Gyung. Also, Aion as circulation and eternity is also approached. To express these diverse temporalities in <Sookheungyamaejam-do VR>, we analyze how it uses symbolic materials such as Angbuilgu, a sundial of the Joseon dynasty. Our VR also presents the different section of time in a day by arranging the different time-portals in their spatial arrangement. In each portal the VR allows the user to navigate the past and present time. In making this, we also referred to <The Khronos Projector>, which unfolds the time in a spatial way. The process of re-mediating the contents of philosophical books with VR contents is an opportunity to analyze the temporality contained in its philosophy, and at the same time to examine the unique temporality that can only be explored in the virtual world.
