본 논문은 가상현실이라는 새로운 매체를 통해서 불교철학을 새롭게 해석할 수 있을지에 대해서 다룬다. 그런 검토가 필요한 현실적인 이유 중 하나는 불교학 외부에서 수많은 철학적 논문, 비전문가의 블로그, SF 작품과 그에 대한 문화평론 등에서 가상현실과 불교의 이론을 접목시키려는 시도들이 세계적으로 끊임없이 진행되고 있음에도 불구하고 불교학 내부에서는 이에 대한 손에 꼽는 연구가 존재할 뿐이고, 그나마도 연구자들 사이에서 주장의 교환이 이루어지지 못하여 본격적인 논의로 이행되지 못하고 있기 때문이다. 그 검토가 되는 대상은 상속의 찰나멸, 유식무경, 인과효력(arthakriyā)과 같은 개념들이다. 결론적으로, 가상현실을 통해서 불교 이론의 개연성을 재확인하고, 논리적 문제를 수정하고 보완하며, 모호한 표현에 대한 명확한 이해를 줄 수 있는 사례를 확인하였다.
Abstract
This paper deals with the new interpretation of Buddhist philosophy through a new medium called virtual reality. Many people have attempted to integrate virtual reality with Buddhist doctrines in philosophical papers outside of Buddhism, non-expert blogs, Sci-Fi works, and cultural criticism about them. There are, however, very few researches by proper Buddhist researchers, and even they are not being expanded to their specific discussions, for there is no critical exchange of arguments among them. Thus, there exists the necessity for this kind of comprehensive review. The objects to be revisited are concepts such as the Buddhist doctrine of momentariness (kṣaṇika), ‘nothing but cognition/consciousness’ (vijñāptimātra), purposive action (arthakriyā), and the proof of the other minds (santānāntara). In conclusion, we came to ascertain that it is possible to reconfirm the plausibility of the Buddhist doctrines, correcting and complementing logical problems in the Buddhist theories, and giving a clear understanding of ambiguous expressions in the Buddhist philosophical works through virtual reality.
