Abstract
(Background and Purpose) Virtual Reality (VR) is emerging as a transformative technology that extends human experience by enabling interactions with environments beyond immediate physical presence. It provides the possibility of remote experiences, making it increasingly relevant across industries. However, existing VR research remains heavily focused on the development of technical aspects—such as platforms, simulations, and devices—while lacking a deeper investigation into the fundamental human motivations behind VR engagement. This study addresses this gap by examining the motivation for VR engagement from a human-centered and evolutionary perspective. Specifically, it analyzes how VR transforms and extends the human sense of remoteness in three domains: space, time, and cognition. The ultimate aim is to explore the essential meaning and value that virtual experiences provide to humans and to propose a new theoretical perspective grounded in human nature. (Method) This research employs literature review and conceptual analysis to examine the core characteristics of VR and its role in enabling remote experience. First, it investigates the evolutionary origins of the human tendency to seek experiences beyond immediate surroundings. Drawing from evolutionary psychology and cognitive science, the study argues that the desire for remoteness is an adaptive trait that allowed early humans to plan, imagine, and survive. Next, the study reviews classical and modern VR theories and compares them with the proposed framework to validate and expand its argument. Remote experience is then classified into spatial, temporal, and cognitive domains, and each is analyzed in terms of how it is transformed and implemented within VR environments. (Results) The study reveals that VR does not simply simulate reality but reconstructs and reshapes how humans perceive and engage with the world. Spatial remoteness in VR enables users to experience places that are otherwise inaccessible, breaking physical limitations and providing rich sensory and cognitive engagement. Temporal remoteness allows users to revisit the past or simulate future events, reinforcing memory and enhancing prediction capabilities. Cognitive remoteness goes beyond physical and temporal constraints, offering a platform for abstract thinking, reinterpretation, and mental expansion. (Conclusions) Ultimately, this study argues that VR is not a passive simulation tool but an active environment for experience construction. By satisfying the human desire for remoteness—rooted in our evolutionary nature—VR enables new forms of experiential meaning. It reshapes how humans assign value to space, time, and thought, potentially altering cognitive frameworks. Future research should continue exploring how VR can enhance the core value of human experience beyond its technological applications.
