Abstract
The objective of this research is to search for various methods to visualize Korean traditional ideas which can be connected with mathematics. To achieve this goal, we first observe arts and culture resulted from Korean traditional ideas. The considered traditional ideas are Round Heaven Flat Earth, SambunSonik, Taegeuk Bagua, Yin Yang Five Elements, and Heaven, Earth, and Man. Based on these ideas, this research proposes some examples of visualization in pairs: Round Heaven Flat Earth, SambunSonik and four string lyre, Taegeuk Bagua and binary sequence, Five Directional Colors and Euler square, and Hangeul and frieze/wallpaper patterns. In the case of Round Heaven Flat Earth, SambunSonik and four string lyre, we apply the idea of Round Heaven Flat Earth and two rational numbers to a musical instrument inspired by a painting by Raffaello. In the case of Taegeuk Bagua and binary sequence, we present Bagua as binary sequences and converted those sequences to patterns with red and blue colors, and obtain a puzzle. In the case of Five Directional Colors and Euler square, we converted numbers in the 5×5 square to five directional colors and visualize them as a mobile with Taegeuk patterns. Furthermore, using rainbow colors with five directional colors, we visualize 9×9 square as a mobile with Taegeuk patterns to symbolize the harmony of Korean and Western culture. In the case of Hangeul and frieze/wallpaper patterns, we produce some frieze/wallpaper patterns based on Hangeul through mathematical process introduced in a previous research. As for frieze, we propose two sets of seven frieze patterns based on Hangeul consonants and vowels, and apply them to masking tape, dish, and umbrella. As for wallpaper, we produce patterns based on consonants appeared in the pseudonyms of scholars mentioned in this research, and apply them to T-shirts. The approach such as this seems to open the possibility of customizing of names. It is hoped that the approaches proposed in this research be a motive for various types of flourishing of Korean tradition, culture, and arts.
