Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the concept of allegory multi-layered in the works of leading artists while examining borderless contemporary art. ‘Allegory’, which is commonly used in the sense of ‘seeing differently and interpreting differently’, has been transformed from the classic allegory, which tried to achieve lessons or moral achievements through multifaceted screens, to today’s concept that demands multiple interpretations indefinitely. Allegory in contemporary art, which is in line with the concept of post-structuralism, is a deconstructive concept with a different approach from the hermeneutic text concept. Deconstruction aesthetics, which rebelled against the traditional aesthetic theory of Europe, has a common feature of demanding ‘something new’ while rejecting existing art. The concept of allegory dealt with in the text is clearly revealed in Derrida’s deconstruction and différance. Derrida’s ‘différance’ is interpreted as the ambivalence of allegory. In other words, his concept becomes the central point that can explain the paradoxical aspect of contemporary art by comparing it to absence, and becomes the theoretical methodology leading this thesis. In the end, it is because of ‘absence’ that diversification of meaning is established. In this way, contemporary art decategorizes and deconceptualizes the aesthetic layer of boundaries. Allegory is at the center of this situation. In this regard, this thesis analyzed allegorical works that can delicately read an aspect of contemporary art. In particular, this thesis focuses on the works of Tino Sehgal, Pierre Huyghe, and Michael Krebber, who prove this situation. Tino Sehgal adopts a strategy of keeping a certain distance from Jaehyun. Pierre Huyghe reorganizes the boundary between virtuality and illusion. Michael Krebber raises the spirit of the times in art by simultaneously observing art and the conditions and situations surrounding it. After all, their formative language is at the center of leading contemporary art by reigniting ‘allegory’ into a new phase.
