Abstract

This study aims to analyze that work in movement characterized by an open work can generate ambiguity through play with the audience. The ambiguity generated from an open work has the power of transformation that is hidden in the imperceptible realm. Therefore, understanding the meaning of openness is exploring the creation and transformation of a variable and practical reality that is not identified or defined by a specific concept or world view. In contemporary art, artwork does not mean an artifact completed by the hands of artists. The preference for an open model to an undetermined state, instead of determining the character of a work, is a result of a deconstructive and critical view of contemporary art. The aesthetic pleasure of the audience arises during the ‘process’ resulting from ‘performativity’ that allows them to find possibilities of change in a continuously open process rather than recognizing the determined form of a work. The researcher understood the open process of performativity resulting from the characteristics of openness as a constant play of ‘interpretation’, and examined the potential value of play in relation to modern aesthetics through a study of the concept of play with Johan Huizinga and Roger Caillois. Play dualizes reality. Play is separated from daily lives but does not negate them. Play through art also addresses possibilities of positivity in indeterminacy in the same vein. The author’s works in movement and the audience’s play are events occurring when experiencing art and, at the same time, experiences that bring changes to receivers. The creativity of the audience who encounters open artwork enables collaborative art through play, and the play in the aesthetics of encounter encompasses an opportunity of affirmation. Affirmation of a new world, and a way to see and think about the world differently. This study lays its significance on that the creative opportunities of play make us think differently and that it can take the place of uniformity in art.
