Abstract
This study aims to analyze the various obstacles that the audience experiences in the particular art form of participatory art and to explore the resulting probability of reflection based on the theory of play. For this purpose, the theoretical backgrounds in this paper are Nietzsche’s philosophy of “Amor fati” and Roger Caillois’ theory of “play (ludus).” Nietzsche emphasized the “affirmative” attitude towards pains (obstacles) in life, while Roger Caillois addressed obstacles as elements of creativity. In light of this, this paper examines and analyzes Erwin Wurm’s One Minute Sculptures, Rirkrit Tiravanija’s Untitled (Free), Martin Creed’s Half the Air in a Given Space, and Doris Salcedo’s Shibboleth. In each piece, the physical and psychological obstacles the audience experiences are key elements of the play’s mechanics, inviting them to acknowledge these obstacles and enjoy the immersion and pleasure of play. Through the analysis of art pieces, this paper categorizes the different obstacles introduced in each piece into personal, interpersonal, and spatial types, as well as play categories. It also explores the possibility of these obstacles leading to creative moments and motivating various reflections through changes in perception. This study invites the audience to reconsider the possibility of reflection through “obstacles” in various forms of art that discuss the body.
