Abstract
The purpose of this study is to expand the research area by analyzing surrealist art from theperspective of play theory and to examine the meaning and value of the playful spirit inherent insurrealist art. Through this, I attempted to overcome the limitations of surrealist art researchthat focused on Sigmund Freud's psychoanalysis. For this purpose, this study at first reviewedthe literature on play theory, that is, the theory of Johan Huizinga and Roger Kaiwa that emergedat the time. And then I analyzed early 20th-century European surrealist art based on the playtheory. Surrealist art and play theory have something in common that they reflected on the erathrough playfulness during the chaos of World War. This commonality is not a simplecoincidence, but a phenomenon with historical significance. Accordingly, this study derived thefollowing points. Surrealist art, which relies on chance and semi-automatic experiments, showsthe playful attributes of alea and ilinx suggested by Caillois. The playful nature of surrealist arthas meaning beyond simple deviant experimentation. Surrealist art projects the playful spirit thatcombines ‘paidia’, the instinct to pursue improvisation and joy, as well as ‘ludus’, the instinct topursue unreasonable difficulties. Surrealist artists were not satisfied with the unconventionalresults of playful experiments, but rather created a new reality, or surreality, by imposing a neworder on the reality that had been dismantled through experiments. The playful attitude ofsurrealist art was a method of desocialization that dismantled the real world. In addition, surrealist art was a manifestation of the playful spirit that sublimated and overcome the extremeanxiety and skepticism caused by the two World Wars. In conclusion, surrealist art is morevaluable in that it not only borrowed playful attributes to escape the form of traditionalrepresentational art, but also showed a reflective nature that creatively reconstructs reality. Thisstudy is expected to broaden the understanding of surrealist art and promote research on theconvergence of play theory and art.
