Abstract

The purpose of this study is to conduct a humanistic examination of ‘Typography as a new way of using letters.’ In communication, non-verbal elements such as gestures, facial expressions, and sounds play an important role in conveying ‘emotional meaning.’ Nowadays, we communicate more through written words than spoken words, with most text communication being done through ‘Typography.’ In this context, ‘Typography’ encompasses more than just ‘letterpress printing’; it also includes ‘gestures’ that externalize human internal experiences such as sounds, images, and emotions. The research method is a literature study that examines significant discourses on ‘gesture.’ First, André Leroux-Gruen argues that there has been a language of gestures since the beginning of civilization. Emmanuel Anati suggests that pictograms in cave paintings contain ‘psychograms.’ Jacques Derrida redefines gestures as a ‘trace’ and characterizes the pre-letter of writing as ‘archi-écriture,’ describing the relationship between gesture and speech as a ‘supplément.’ Giorgio Agamben argues that a gesture is a “language within a language” that achieves “incommunicable communication.” In this paper, we apply this concept of gesture to ‘Typography’ and explore its potential as a new way of using letters. In summary, this research is an interdisciplinary study that takes a transversal approach, drawing from communication studies and media philosophy, beginning with the significant study of ‘gesture.’ It aims to expand existing Typography research into a new ‘agencement’ within ‘visual humanities.’ Ultimately, this research should be conducted as a study of Hangeul Typography, starting with 『Hoonminjeongyeom』. The study of Hangeul Typography should incorporate existing typographic principles while also exploring new methods of Hangeul Typography. Therefore, this paper is significant as a preliminary study of ‘new Hangeul Grammatology.’
