Abstract
Korea is a country heavily influenced by international energy prices as it relies on imports for 92.8% of its energy. However, it is also the tenth most energy-consuming country in the world. It is also noticable that its energy use in the home sector is steadily increasing. Amid the growing importance of practicing carbon neutrality to fight against environmental pollution around the world, reducing energy consumption is recognized as one of the most convincing ways to realize carbon neutrality. Against this backdrop, this study aims to suggest mobile application services to save home energy based on service design methodology to increase energy efficiency at home. To this end, this article conducted a review of previous studies to identify energy use feedback methods that are highly effective at saving energy, examined the current status of home energy billing services in the country, and analyzed the functions and UI of related mobile applications. For the empirical study, contextual interviews were conducted with five people who have experience of checking and paying home energy bills. This article derived two personas from these interviews and created a customer journey map for users. Mobile application services for home energy saving in this study are designed to perform a total of four functions: monitoring real-time energy usage and analyzing energy consumption patterns; providing a detailed breakdown of an energy bill and an easy-to-use payment system; providing details of government incentives and support measures for energy efficiency and other various information; and providing estimated energy bills. The significance of this study is to suggest the direction in which the development of mobile application services for home energy conservation should take by making use of service design methodology, and to propose services that will lead to an increased interest in energy efficiency from general public and a transition to a lifestyle focused on energy saving by providing convenient and highly practical home energy billing services via mobile applications.
