Abstract
This paper aims to examine the significance of the process through which Dansaekhwa, influenced by abstract expressionism, emerged and established itself as a representative aesthetic of Koreaness. The goal is to explore the potential expansion of the monochromatic tradition. Dansaekhwa has been evaluated as a representative abstract art form, revealing the aesthetic, emotional, and historical identity of Korea. In particular, it investigates not only its significance within the Korean art world but also its reflection within the broader context of contemporary art in the 20th century. For this purpose, this paper aims to examine the characteristics of Dansaekhwa in Korea by exploring the work of Mark Rothko, a master of 20th-century color field abstraction, and Ha, Jonghyun, a prominent Korean monochromic artist. It also delves into the world of Kang, Myosoo’s artwork, which expresses the sublime aesthetic through Dansaekhwa, influenced by both of them. Kang Myosoo’s exploration of light and sublimation in her artwork can be summarized as utilizing a limited color palette in painting, inheriting the emphasis on materiality and action from Ha, Jonghyun, and intending to facilitate an encounter between the artwork and the viewer through dramatic effect just like Rothko. By sequentially examining the distinctive features of the artwork of these three artists, this study explores how the traditions of color field abstractions and Dansaekhwa are perceived within the horizon of contemporary art and assesses their potential for expansion in the current context.
