Abstract
This study explores the aesthetics of performativity and materiality in Dansaekhwa, with particular focus on the concepts of haptic visuality and skin–like surfaces. Emerging as a distinct trajectory within Korean contemporary art, Dansaekhwa moves beyond the confines of monochrome abstraction by expanding sensory experience through repetitive gestures and material experimentation. The study asserts that Dansaekhwa establishes a unique visual language that distinguishes it from Western movements such as Color–Field Painting and Minimalism, especially by redefining the surface as a space of embodied experience rather than a solely visual element. In Dansaekhwa, the surface functions analogously to human skin–a temporal and material site that records the accumulation of actions over time, formed through acts of meditative repetition. Grounded in the theoretical perspectives of Yusuke Nakahara, Alois Riegl, Gilles Deleuze, and Laura U. Marks, the research analyzes how haptic visuality operates in the formation of Dansaekhwa aesthetics. Further, it applies Kim MiKyung’s notion of Soye(素藝) to illuminate the essential pictorial and philosophical dimensions of the movement’s visual language. Through in–depth analyses of works by Park SeoBo, Chung SangHwa, Yun HyongKeun, and Chung ChangSup, the study demonstrates how their compositional strategies emerge from performative repetition and material inquiry. It also considers how the conceptual framework of Dansaekhwa can be inherited and expanded within contemporary art practices. Finally, the study calls for a reassessment of Dansaekhwa’s position within global art history and reflects on its enduring influence across evolving art discourses.
