Abstract

Technology has traditionally evolved to maximize production efficiency, with industrial roboticarms being developed as key tools in this advancement. Recently, as new technologies havespurred various artistic experiments, industrial robotic arms have gained attention as creativemediums. Within the realm of robotic art, the potential of these arms as artistic media has beenexplored. However, due to the diversity of robot types, each with unique sculptural, functional, and social characteristics, a more focused analysis is required to understand their potential asartistic media. This study specifically investigates industrial robotic arms, which are accessibleand standardized for stability, to explore their viability as an artistic medium. By reviewing casestudies in robotic art, the research identifies the characteristics of industrial robotic arms in thiscontext. The study also examines their definition, history, and general components to understandtheir functional traits and organizes technical information relevant for artistic use. A case studyof eleven selected art projects utilizing industrial robotic arms was conducted. Based on thefunctional characteristics of the robots used in each project, a systematic classification wasproposed, categorizing the works into installation-based performance type, interaction-basedperformance type, installation-based production type, and interaction-based production type. The artistic medium characteristics of industrial robotic arms were derived by distinguishingbetween functional and aesthetic characteristics. The functional characteristics were analyzed interms of precision, repetitiveness, programmability, stability, and functional integration, while theaesthetic characteristics were interpreted through the lenses of readymade, new materialism, andsystems aesthetics. The conclusions of this study aim to enhance the understanding of industrialrobotic arms as tools for artistic expression and provide a meaningful foundation for futureartistic experiments and creative work.
