Abstract
From the 1930s, when they focused on political activity, surrealists showed a collective interest in myths that dealt with mysterious fantasy worlds. Rather than simply embracing mythological themes, they created their own myths, known as modern mythologies (“mythologies modernes”). In this study, my aim is to regard myth within the surrealist movement as a keyword for understanding the continuity between the 1930s and the 1940s, when surrealists fled to the United States, and to establish the myths created by surrealists as a basis for showing their movements before and after World War II in a single context. The reason surrealists showed interest in actual politics and myth at the same time was probably because myth becomes an inevitable methodology at the basis of collective emotional culture in the quest for a surrealist revolution that brings the human psychological world into society. In the modern mythologies embodied through the works and international exhibitions of surrealists, individuality expressed from the innermost subconscious becomes the fundamental requisite of the community, so that there is no contradiction between individuality and collective values, and the universal creativity inherent in all people brings into focus a community that shares one common area. In such communities, equal communication free from all power structures and cultural hierarchies becomes possible. Through such arguments, I reveal that myth in the surrealist movement did not signify escape from actual society but, on the contrary, was directly related to the realization of the surrealists’ aim: the building of a surreal.
