Abstract

This research is a study on the possibility of establishing the contemporary craft market through the value data from the secondary art market where the sales price of art is transparently disclosed. In Chapter 2, the value data from both the primary art market and the secondary art market are compared to perceive transparency and reliability of the secondary art market. Chapter 3 sets up data derivation subjects and methods for case studies and processes data to analyze the market. The data are derived and analyzed by collecting public auction records of the artists who had been presented with craft exhibitions at the multinational mega-dealer galleries over the past five years selected primarily from the author's previous research. The results are summarized as follows. 1)The data that can be processed into six representative values are derived through 1,302 public auction records of 29 artists subject to the study. 2)The artists have made various records as market-able artists whose works can be traded through the public auctions in the second art market in the last five years. 3)New lowest price records have tended to be fetched with editions or small art works, suggesting that resales have been active in the secondary market. 4)Highest record prices of those artists have been newly fetched, and a new highest price record of contemporary craft category has also been broken. 5)The auction houses presenting craft related sales in 165 countries are mostly located in the United States and the United Kingdom while both online art market and offline art market have been active. In conclusion, it is necessary to understand the differences in the mechanisms of each art market in which work value data are produced and further study the characteristics and utilization of secondary art market data. Furthermore, efforts should be made to expand the contemporary craft market by securing market transparency and reliability through the establishment of the secondary market of contemporary craft.
