초록

Along with an increasing number of non-native speakers, numerous varieties of English and the issues of ELF (English as a Lingua Franca) have emerged. It has recently been accepted that the ownership of English belong to the speakers of non-native as well as native, since the language, English, has become a tool for people all around the world who communicate with each other as ELF speakers. The aim of this study is to find out what attitudes Korean English teachers have toward ELF and how they react to the varieties of English it gives birth to. The questionnaire was designed to investigate their perceptions about common lexical and grammatical features of ELF, which should be considered as acceptable in theory. The data was collected from 109 teachers both from the public and private sector. The result of the study shows that most of the participants were very receptive to and positive about wide variety of Englishes. Nevertheless, most of them still showed their preferences for English in the Inner Circle of Kachru as the World Standard English.
