Abstract

This study analyzes how advancements in digital technology have influenced the design and utilization of Olympic mascots, focusing on Hodori from the 1988 Seoul Olympics and Soohorang from the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics. The analysis highlights differences driven by the 30-year technological gap between the two mascots. The study also suggests strategies for future designs in changing technological contexts. Data were sourced from official Olympic records, the IOC library, and digital platforms like YouTube, particularly PyeongChang’s official channel. In terms of design, Hodori was created as a 2D flat character emphasizing traditional Korean culture. Variations of Hodori were used to promote Korea globally, reflecting national identity. The mascot was distributed via the primary media of the 1980s, including newspapers, magazines, TV, and merchandise such as plush toys. By contrast, Soohorang was developed as a 3D character symbolizing the digital era. Its design included variations specifically crafted for emojis on messaging platforms, marking a shift from analog to digital engagement. Utilization methods also showed stark contrasts. While Hodori relied on traditional media and physical products, Soohorang embraced digital technologies and modern communication strategies. It was the first Olympic mascot produced as an emoji and actively engaged audiences through social media and YouTube. Moreover, Soohorang integrated cutting-edge ICT tools such as drones, artificial intelligence(AI), and augmented reality(AR) for interactive and immersive experiences. This study analyzes the design and utilization of Hodori and Soohorang from the perspective of technological development, providing insights into how mascots can evolve in a rapidly changing era. It also proposes a direction for mascot development when a country hosts the Olympics again under different technical contexts.
