Abstract

This study is grounded in Charles Sanders Peirce’s triadic semiotic theory and examines the official mascots of the Winter Olympic Games from 1976 to 2026. By constructing an "Interpretant Matrix" analytical framework, the research explores the types of national cultural symbols embedded in the mascots and their mechanisms of visual expression. Through a multidimensional analysis of icons, indices, and symbols, combined with a five category classification system—national, natural, historical, everyday life, and artistic symbols—the study systematically encodes, classifies, and statistically analyzes the symbolic features of mascots from 14 Winter Olympic Games. The findings reveal that national and artistic symbols appear most frequently (14 times each), highlighting the host countries’ emphasis on integrating cultural identity with artistic expression in mascot design. This trend underscores the mascot's vital role as a medium of cultural communication in conveying national image and ethnic spirit. Natural and everyday life symbols each appear 11 times, reflecting a design focus on ecological environments, regional characteristics, and daily life culture, which aligns with the modern Olympic movement's emphasis on sustainability and social engagement. In contrast, historical symbols are less frequent, appearing only 7 times, suggesting the limitations posed by the abstract nature of historical elements and the difficulty of adapting them into cartoon form. Overall, Winter Olympic mascots serve as important vehicles for the transmission of Olympic culture, symbolically embodying national image and ethnic spirit. At the same time, they successfully integrate artistic quality and ecological awareness, offering a unique visual representation of the Olympic spirit. This paper aims to uncover the cultural encoding logic and meaning production pathways of Olympic mascots from a semiotic perspective, providing a theoretical framework and practical guidance for image design and visual communication strategies in future large scale international events.
