Abstract

This research investigates the aesthetics of the everyday in contemporary Korean functional ceramics. Immanuel Kant categorized art into functional and non-functional dichotomies, suggesting that ceramics held lower artistic value than pure art due to their utilitarian nature. In contrast, Eastern traditions have long recognized ceramics as equivalent to fine art. Contemporary views challenge these traditional distinctions, acknowledging that art incorporating everyday materials can introduce new concepts and possess aesthetic value. As a result, ceramics are now valued as artworks that merge innovative concepts with practical utility. This shift is partly attributed to the exploration of everyday aesthetics, which suggests that ceramics, being practical and commonly utilized, can present novel aesthetic perspectives. This study underscores the significance of examining how everyday aesthetics manifest in ceramics. The theoretical framework is grounded in Henri Lefebvre’s concept of ‘Appropriation’ and Martin Heidegger’s idea of ‘Unverborgenheit,’ offering a philosophical lens for interpreting everyday aesthetics. The analysis also considers everyday aesthetics as reflected in contemporary painting, traditional ceramics, and modern ceramic practices. In addition, the study examines the perspectives of Korean ceramic artists, drawing insights into how everyday aesthetics influence their creative approaches. Findings reveal that ceramics have long employed everyday materials and contexts, which were historically undervalued in artistic terms due to their utilitarian associations. However, the contemporary recognition of practical items made from everyday materials as legitimate artworks signifies a profound shift in perception. Korean functional ceramics are especially notable for their innovative engagement with everyday concepts, materials, and expressions, thereby generating new aesthetic values. Although materials and production techniques have changed little over time, functional ceramics are now appreciated as artworks that integrate utility and aesthetic reflection through the framework of everyday aesthetics. This study asserts that functional ceramics have evolved into a hybrid art form that seamlessly fuses practical functionality with the core principles of everyday aesthetics.
