Abstract
This study is part of research on form and perception in multispace environments, where digital and physical spaces overlap, and aims to analyze food design cases that are evolving under the influence of digitalization. The objective of this study is to examine how digital form design affects the cross-modal correspondence of food, focusing on the interaction between form and perception. Food design has expanded beyond mere aesthetics into an experiential design domain, where sensory elements such as taste, touch, sight, smell, and sound interact. Through cross-modal correspondence, food design enables a more precise perception of taste by establishing consistent connections between different senses. This study investigates the process of designing forms in digital environments and how these digital forms are reflected in physical food. Through case analysis, common patterns in how digital form design enhances sensory experiences were identified as follows:Transformation of forms within digital environments can induce sensory contrast and provide unexpected tactile experiences, strengthening cross-modal correspondence. Digitally rendered textures and forms allow for precise manipulation of tactile associations, enhancing the connection between sight and touch. The use of simulations in the form design phase enhances the predictability and viability of sensory experiences. Digital design enables the creation of experimental forms that are difficult to achieve through traditional physical design methods, expanding the scope of sensory interactions and offering new experiences of sensory contrast and combination. This study suggests that digital form design has the potential to become a crucial approach in food design. Specifically, it confirms that form design in digital environments influences actual sensory experiences and enhances cross-modal correspondence through sensory augmentation. Future research should explore how digital form design can be applied in multispace environments and examine its impact on user experiences in greater detail.
