Abstract
(Research Background and Purpose) Remarkable advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) have become a driving force for innovative transformations across myriad fields, including the design industry. For designers to employ AI to create aesthetic forms actively and effectively, a comprehensive understanding of the human cognitive system is indispensable. Additionally, a critical component of successful implementation is the ability to understand and apply artistic language rooted in the combined system of taste and vision - two sensory experiences deeply interwoven with human cognition. This study aims to leverage AI for the development of formative languages in design. The focus is on investigating the visual art characteristics that symbolize sweetness, a representative stimulus of taste, with the ultimate goal of enabling AI to understand and apply visual stimuli that are intricately connected to human taste experiences. (Method) To harness AI capabilities for design purposes, we adopted the following multipronged research methods. First, an extensive literature review was conducted to build a robust foundation for language utilization in AI design. Second, by examining previous sensory combination studies, formative elements associated with sweetness were synthesized, and prompts were subsequently designed. Third, a methodological validation of the parameters of these prompts was conducted to comprehend the learning process. Fourth, the validated prompts were rigorously tested through a series of three distinctive art experiments: two-dimensional, three-dimensional, and applied. Finally, the generated forms and languages were critically evaluated with an objective assessment of their impact and potential. (Results) Throughout this research, there has been a deliberate effort to articulate the concept of sweetness in formative language using AI to generate visually compelling designs. Insights drawn from a thorough literature review and an understanding of human perception processes have paved the way for the successful manipulation and reproduction of these designs through AI. As AI technology continues to evolve and mature, we anticipate that efforts to create art forms based on an understanding of combined sensory experiences will become more nuanced and sophisticated and, consequently, find a broader range of applications across diverse fields. (Conclusion) The central contribution of this study is the validation of the feasibility of creating formative designs based on combined sensory experiences using AI. The methods expounded in this study open new realms of possibilities for applications across various fields and modalities. As we look forward to subsequent research, we expect a multitude of formative creation methodologies to be proposed, each based on a lucid understanding of cognitive systems and their intricate interplay with the human senses.
