Abstract

With the recent rapid growth of the Korean TV drama industry, the production and distribution of promotional tools—particularly drama posters—have become more diversified and systematized. Consequently, recurring graphic design elements and visual trends are increasingly evident in these posters. However, scholarly research on this subject remains limited. The lack of systematic analysis of drama posters—as both promotional tools and visual symbols reflecting societal change—highlights the need for further academic inquiry. This study aims to analyze the visual characteristics of Korean romance drama posters from the 1990s to the 2020s, and to examine how these features both influence and are influenced by Korean society. A theoretical foundation was first established through a literature review, followed by case studies of selected dramas and their posters. The research explored shifts in drama narratives alongside broader societal trends, and then analyzed formal design elements such as visual expression, imagery, character representation, color schemes, and promotional media. Specifically, the study examined 850 posters divided into three time periods—the 1990s, 2000s, and post-2010s—to identify visual elements that reflect sociocultural changes over time. The findings show that drama posters exhibit distinctive visual styles in each period, functioning as social symbols that convey narrative and cultural meaning. This process appears to impact not only the audience but also the designers involved in poster creation. By examining these posters from a graphic design perspective, the study systematically identifies trends in visual symbolism and stylistic expression across decades. It is hoped that this research will stimulate further academic discussion on the aesthetics of drama posters and expand our understanding of popular culture and visual communication.
