Abstract
This study aims to assess how the design philosophy of Byoung-kyoo Chung, the first professional book designer in South Korea, affects contemporary book design practice by conducting a comprehensive examination of his cover designs from the 1970s to the 1990s. Although prior studies have given an overview of Chung's oeuvre and philosophy, this research focuses on analyzing how his early designs fostered emotional interaction with readers and how this formative emotional approach has influenced contemporary trends in book design. The study examines 20 representative cover designs created by Chung during his most active period of stylistic experimentation. These designs encompass various genres, such as literature, art, and photography. The analysis focuses on works that are characterized by Korean typography and image management strategies. This study employs a mixed-method approach, combining a theoretical review with an emotional assessment. The theoretical analysis interprets Chung's design philosophy through the lens of Gestalt theory and modernist design principles. The emotional assessment utilizes a 7-point scale with 15 pairs of SD adjectives for 30 individuals in the design and publishing fields. The results of the analysis prove that Chung's designs evoke varied emotional responses in readers through four emotional factors: activity, aesthetics, jaggedness, and familiarity. The use of typographic emphasis and montage techniques is found to elicit high activity, while margin-centered compositions triggered aesthetics and familiarity. This finding shows that the design is a strategic approach that considers emotional connections, suggesting that an emotion-centered form language can be effective in contemporary book design practice. Future research could enrich the discussion by conducting comparative analysis over time, exploring how Chung’s designs have evolved since the 2000s and how they have adapted to the digital media environment.
