Abstract
This study analyzes how the core visual language elements in contemporary painting—form, color, and line—function not merely as means of expression but as metaphorical mechanisms that construct multilayered sensory and conceptual semantic networks. In existing visual art discourse, metaphor has often been regarded primarily as a linguistic device or an auxiliary tool for conceptual interpretation, which does not adequately account for the complex formal and sensory operations of visual metaphor. In contrast, this research highlights metaphor as a formative visual language that mediates between sensation and cognition, proposing an expanded understanding of metaphor beyond textual or verbal frameworks. To this end, the study draws on theoretical foundations from cognitive science (George Lakoff, Mark Johnson), linguistics, and aesthetics to articulate how metaphor operates within visual forms. It incorporates qualitative interpretation as its main methodology, focusing on types and structures of metaphor and examining how selected contemporary artworks demonstrate transformations and semantic constructions of formative language. Specifically, it analyzes the metaphor of form through Elizabeth Murray’s formal transformation and painterly composition, and Eva Hesse’s organic structures. The metaphor of interiority is explored via Louise Bourgeois’s symbolic use of color and Yayoi Kusama’s repetitive chromatic patterns that visualize psychological states. The findings reveal that metaphor, through the dynamic interaction of formal elements, simultaneously induces sensory intuition and conceptual reflection, functioning as a key mechanism that expands the expressive structure of visual art. It also demonstrates how metaphor operates as a composite language that integrates personal experience, cultural context, and psychological representation. This study is a practice-based inquiry grounded in the author’s own creative practice, investigating how formative elements in painting operate metaphorically. As an endeavor to expand sensory interpretation and formative approaches to metaphorical expression in visual art, it aims to offer a meaningful reference point for future researchers and artists who share similar conceptual concerns.
