Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the impact of visual language expression using geometric forms on the delivery of meaning within the context of basic formative design education. At the foundational stage of design education, visual language holds significance beyond simple form-making and can serve as a crucial educational tool that enhances learners’ formative thinking and visual interpretation skills. To this end, this study designed a formative experiment for first-year visual design students, focusing on abstract conceptual words, and examined how visual expression through geometric shapes influences meaning delivery. The experiment was conducted based on five conceptual themes: "Tension–Conflict," "Meet," "Heavy," "Noisy," and "Rise–Ascend." Each outcome was analyzed through both quantitative and qualitative methods based on five criteria: clarity, intuitiveness, consistency between form and meaning, aesthetic completeness, and overall excellence. Survey evaluations were conducted by a multi-layered group of assessors, including design majors, non-majors, and educators. The statistical validity of the results was verified through a chi-square test system to ensure reliability. The analysis revealed that works with stronger applications of formative principles demonstrated significantly higher levels of visual clarity and meaning delivery. This suggests that visual language can function as a structured system grounded in formative grammar, beyond mere aesthetic presentation. Furthermore, the study proposes that in basic formative education, the ability to visually interpret and logically construct conceptual words should become a central educational objective. Based on this, the study suggests three educational strategies: (1) conceptual-based formative analysis training that strengthens the connection between form and concept, (2) systematization of visual grammar for rule-based composition, and (3) iterative design training incorporating audience response as a form of validation. These strategies are expected to contribute to the establishment of visual language as a meaningful and structured system of communication.
