(연구 배경 및 목적) 현대 메모리얼 뮤지엄은 단순히 비극적 사건을 기록하는 것을 넘어, 사회적 성찰과 치유의 담론을 형성하는 ‘수사적 텍스트’로 기능한다. 이 과정에서 ‘은유’는 관람객의 정서적 공감을 이끌어내는 핵심적인 수사 전략으로 활용된다. 그러나 은유적 전시연출의 작동 방식에 대한 체계적이고 심층적인 연구는 부족한 실정이다. 이에 본 연구는 메모리얼 뮤지엄의 은유적 전시연출 메커니즘을 ‘의미 형성–표현 매체–수사적 기능’이라는 통합적 분석 틀을 사용하여 그 특성을 분석하고자한다. 이러한 접근을 통해 전시디자인의 커뮤니케이션 전략에 대한 이론적 이해를 심화하고, 전시 기획 및 디자인 실무를 위한실천적 시사점을 제시하는 것을 목적으로 한다. (연구 방법) 본 연구는 레이코프와 존슨의 ‘개념적 은유 이론’과 야콥슨의‘언어기능 이론’을 이론적 기반으로 채택하였다. 두 이론을 결합하여, 의미 형성에서부터 수사적 효과에 이르는 전 과정을 포괄하는 독자적인 분석 틀을 구축했다. 이 분석 틀에 기반하여 국내외 대표적인 메모리얼 뮤지엄 4곳에서 선정된 8개의 은유적전시연출 사례를 대상으로 심층 분석을 수행하였다. (결과) 분석 결과, 메모리얼 뮤지엄의 은유적 전시연출은 구성 요소들의 유기적 결합으로 특징지어졌다. 첫째, 의미 형성 측면에서는 추상적 개념을 구체적 실체로 치환하는 ‘존재론적 은유’가 중심 기제로 기능했다. 이는 ‘구조적·지향적 은유’와 빈번하게 결합하여 다층적 해석을 유도하고, 관람객이 비극적 사건의 본질을직관적으로 체감하게 했다. 둘째, 표현 매체 측면에서는 ‘공간’의 구조, 재질, 분위기가 핵심 요소로 작동하며, 연출매체 및 아트웍과의 결합을 통해 총체적인 감각 경험을 구축하는 경향을 보였다. 셋째, 수사적 기능 측면에서는 순수한 정보 전달의 ‘지시적 기능’보다 ‘감정표현적 기능’과 ‘시적 기능’이 지배적으로 나타났으며, 이는 은유적 전시연출이 메모리얼 뮤지엄에서정서적 설득과 공감을 유도하는 커뮤니케이션 전략으로 활용됨을 보여준다. (결론) 본 연구는 메모리얼 뮤지엄의 은유적 전시연출이 복합적인 은유 구조, 공간 중심의 감각적 경험, 그리고 정서적 공감을 유도하는 수사적 기능의 조합을 통해 작동함을 실증적으로 규명하였다. 본 연구는 ‘의미 형성–표현 매체–수사적 기능’이라는 통합적 분석 틀을 제시함으로써, 은유적 전시연출에대한 학술적 지평을 넓히고 실무를 위한 체계적인 틀을 제공했다는 점에서 의의를 갖는다. 제안된 분석 틀은 향후 전시 비평의방법론으로 활용될 뿐만 아니라, 전시를 기획하고 설계하는 실무 과정에서 전략적 커뮤니케이션을 위한 구체적인 가이드라인을제공할 것으로 기대된다.
Abstract
(Background and Purpose) Contemporary memorial museums function as 'rhetorical texts' that transcend the mere recording of tragic events, forming discourses of social reflection and healing. In this process, 'metaphor' is utilized as a core rhetorical strategy to elicit emotional empathy from visitors. However, systematic and in-depth research on the mechanisms of metaphorical museography remains insufficient. This study aims to analyze the characteristics of metaphorical museography mechanisms in memorial museums using an integrated analytical framework of 'meaning formation–expression medium–rhetorical function.' Through this approach, the study seeks to deepen the theoretical understanding of communication strategies in exhibition design and provide practical insights for exhibition planning and design. (Method) This study adopted Lakoff and Johnson's 'Conceptual Metaphor Theory' and Jakobson's 'Language Function Theory' as its theoretical foundations. Combining these two theories, an original analytical framework was constructed that encompasses the entire process from meaning formation to rhetorical effects. Based on this analytical framework, an in-depth analysis was conducted on eight metaphorical museography cases selected from four representative memorial museums both domestically and internationally. (Results) The analysis indicate that metaphorical museography in memorial museums is defined by the organic combination of constituent elements. First, in meaning of formation, the ontological metaphor, which converts abstract concepts into concrete entities, emerged as the central mechanism. This frequently combined with 'structural and orientational metaphors' to induce multilayered interpretation, enabling visitors to intuitively experience the essence of tragic events. Second, regarding expression medium, the structure, materials, and atmosphere of 'space' operated as core elements, showing a tendency to construct comprehensive sensory experiences through combination with exhibition media and artworks. Third, in terms of rhetorical function, emotive and poetic functions predominated over the purely informational referential function, demonstrating that metaphorical museography operates as a persuasive strategy to evoke emotional engagement. (Conclusion) This study empirically identified that metaphorical museography in memorial museums operates through a combination of complex metaphorical structures, space-centered sensory experiences, and rhetorical functions that induce emotional empathy. This study holds significance in that it expanded the academic horizon for metaphorical museography and provides a systematic framework for practice by presenting an integrated analytical framework of 'meaning formation–expression medium–rhetorical function.' The proposed analytical framework is expected to serve not only as a methodology for exhibition criticism in the future but also to provide concrete guidelines for strategic communication in the practical process of planning and designing exhibitions.
