초록
Malnutrition is a significant world health crisis, especially in low- and middle-income countries, encompassing both undernutrition and overnutrition and contributing to an alarming 33.8% of child deaths, especially among pre-primary infants in 2023. Severe undernutrition leads to vitamin and protein deficiencies, impairing overall health, while gut imbalance is increasingly identified as a common cause in malnutrition cases. Probiotics—live microorganisms that enhance gut health have a significant impact on improving nutrient absorption and supporting immune activity. This article explores the impact of probiotics in alleviating gastrointestinal disorders, diarrhea, immune impairments, and deficiencies in essential vitamins and minerals. Foods rich in beneficial bacteria, such as fermented rice, kambu (a staple food in Tamil Nadu), and Kimchi (a traditional Korean dish), enhance nutrient bioavailability, boost immune function, and promote digestive efficiency, thereby helping prevent malnutrition. Various probiotic strains, including Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria have been researched for contributions to nutrition and immune function. While probiotics offer significant potential in combating malnutrition, their effectiveness depends on individual health conditions and should complement a holistic nutritional strategy that includes dietary improvements.
