Abstract

This study analyzes orientalist visual representations embedded in Sinbad’s Adventure, an indoor attraction at Lotte World in Seoul. Drawing on the theoretical frameworks of Orientalism, cultural hybridity, and othering, it examines the attraction’s scene composition, characters, costumes, and architectural and background imagery on a sequence-by-sequence basis, comparing them with visual references from the 1950s–1970s Hollywood Sinbad film series. The analysis demonstrates that the attraction collapses images of the Middle East and the Islamic world—originating from heterogeneous temporal and cultural contexts—into a single exoticized adventure narrative, assembling costumes, architectural motifs, and monster iconography without contextual grounding and consequently producing patterned cultural misreadings. Visitors are positioned as subjects who traverse the “space of the Other” along a tightly controlled ride path, a structure that implicitly reinforces asymmetrical gazes and cultural dissonance. By foregrounding these mechanisms, the study reframes theme-park and leisure attractions not merely as commercial entertainment venues but as everyday visual environments that shape imagination and perception toward cultural others. It argues for the necessity of critically evaluating orientalist representational practices that persist within such spaces.
