Abstract
As discussions on gender conflict and identity have expanded in contemporary popular culture, animated films have emerged as a significant cultural medium that shapes gender roles and identities. This study examines the animated film Nimona, which generated controversy during its production for its depictions of queer narratives and non-normative gender representation, in order to explore how contemporary animation constructs and represents gender performativity. This research employs qualitative analysis focusing on visual elements such as appearance, costume, color, and gestures, as well as narrative components including dialogue, relationships, and plot development. The results reveal that Nimona presents fluid and multi-layered forms of gender performativity. On the visual level, characters’ appearances and gestures make visible gender fluidity, marginalized and hegemonic masculinities, and the boundaries of gender norms and power structures. On the narrative level, characters’ dialogues, relational dynamics, and events concretize the formation and transformation of performative gender identity. Through this analysis, the study confirms that gender is a performative identity continuously reconstructed through social norms, power relations, experiences of otherness, and relational redefinition. This research demonstrates that Nimona functions not only as a site of gender representation but also as a narrative device that critically destabilizes gender norms, highlighting animation’s potential as a cultural text that prompts critical reflection on contemporary gender discourse. However, this study does not incorporate audience reception or diverse social interpretations. Further research should compare animations across various platforms and analyze audience responses or online discourse to investigate the social reception of gender performativity.
