이 논문은 2019년 세계적으로 대단한 인기를 끌었던 디즈니 장편 만화영화 <겨울왕국2>에 나타난 젠더 규범의 수행적 전복 양상과 평등주의 공동체의 가능성을 연구한다. 전통적으로 동화는 당대의 규범을 강화하는 텍스트인데, <겨울왕국2>는 원전인 안데르센의 『눈의 여왕』, 전편인 <겨울왕국>을 경유해 여성 젠더, 여성간 관계, 가족 규범을 더 강력히 전복하고 있으며, 더 나아가 이민족과의 공존 방식, 그리고 인간과 정령 혹은 인간과 자연의 공생방식을 모색했다. <겨울왕국2>의 수행성 강화와 함께 확장된 세계관을 이해하기 위해 미국의 철학자이자 퀴어 이론가인 주디스 버틀러의 젠더 수행성 이론뿐 아니라 최근작 『비폭력의 힘』(2020)에 제시된 ‘평등주의 상상계’ 개념을 도입하고자 한다. 평등주의 상상계는 상호 의존성에 기반해 상상된 평등이며, 새롭게 상상된 평등은 개인들 사이의 평등이 아니라 사회에 대한 집단적 평등을 주장한다. 평등은 그것이 표명되기 위해 점점 더 공언된 상호관계성에 의존하는 사회적 관계의 특성이다. 우리는 경제적, 사회적, 정치적 자유와 평등을 구현하는 전지구적 상호 의존성을 존중하는 세계의 건설에 이바지할 필요가 있다.
Abstract
This study examines the subversive performativity of gender norms and the possibility of an egalitarian community in Frozen 2. While fairy tales are the text to strengthen the current norm and gender hierarchy of the time, Frozen 2 subverts the gender norms of original fairy tale Snow Queen and enlarge the prequel Frozen in terms of female gender identity, relations between women, and family structure. It also searches for the ways of cohabitation between different ethnic or national groups or between humans and the nature. Frozen 2 can be reinterpreted by the concept ‘an egalitarian imaginary’ based on ‘interdependence’ of Judith Butler, the American philosopher and a well known queer theorist, suggested in the recently published book The Force of Nonviolence(2020). An egalitarian imaginary is an imagined equality not between individuals but as a collective claim on society. Equality is a feature of social relations that depends for its articulation on an increasingly avowed interdependence. We need to commit to world building that honors global interdependency that embodies ideals of economic, social, and political freedom and equality, with imagining another imaginary.
