Abstract
In digital interactive environments, loading interfaces function as critical visual elements during user waiting periods, influencing both emotional responses and time perception. This study investigates the impact mechanisms of progress indicator animations by manipulating their display characteristics (explicit vs. implicit) and presentation forms (bar-type vs. circular). Grounded in Cognitive Absorption Theory and Time Perception Theory, an experimental framework was developed to assess users’ focused immersion, temporal dissociation, heightened enjoyment, and perceived waiting time under varying visual feedback conditions. Based on user response analysis, explicit animations, by providing clear progress feedback, effectively facilitate user immersion, reduce overestimation of waiting time and anxiety, and significantly enhance user satisfaction and system trust, while implicit animations, lacking clear feedback, tend to induce uncertainty for some users. In terms of presentation form, bar-type animations with linear and continuous features, and circular animations with cyclical motion patterns, exhibited distinct tendenciesacross specific user experience metrics; nevertheless, no significant differences were found in perceived time between the two forms, suggesting that presentation form has a limited overall effect on time perception. According to the outcome analysis, clear progress feedback is identified as a critical factor in optimizing the loading experience, whereas the influence of animation form appears comparatively limited. Therefore, design strategies should prioritize enhancing the clarity of information feedback to improve users’ sense of control and satisfaction, while further investigation across diverse usage contexts and user groups is recommended to deepen the understanding of form-related impact mechanisms. This study provides empirical evidence for optimizing loading animation design and offers both theoretical foundations and practical recommendations for improving interactive interface experiences.
