Abstract
This study examines the significance of the audience body in mobile art from the perspective of contemporary body art. The subjects of the study were mobile art works, two-dimensional and three-dimensional works, and artificial intelligence (AI) art. First, the flow of previous body art was summarized by dividing it into ‘the body as an object of representation’, ‘the artist’s body as a medium of creation and social message’, ‘the artist’s body combined with technology’, ‘the audience’s body as a part of the work and a contacting element’, and ‘bio art through genetic regulation’, and analyzed the audience’s body in mobile art using this as an analysis framework. As a result, first, the audience’s body in mobile art was acting as a part of the work and an implementer of the work through contact, like in existing installation art works, and was being variably integrated and separated from the media by using highly portable mobile devices. Second, mobile art audiences were utilizing data and networks to communicate with various subjects and accept content, showing that this was ‘the audience’s body as an element within data and networking’, which was different from other types. Third, the audience’s body in mobile art was a representative genre that implemented machines and images together. If the subject of the completion of a work of art changed from the ‘artist’ in traditional art to ‘artist and audience’ in installation art, it changed to ‘machine and audience’ in mobile art. There were already cases of this in previous interactive media art, but it was most prominent in mobile art. In addition, as machines and artificial intelligence devices that replace human body functions in real life increase, the boundary between humans and machines is gradually blurring, and this phenomenon can be seen in the bodies of mobile art viewers. Through this study, we were able to reveal the characteristics of the bodies of mobile art viewers that had not been studied until now, and expand the scope of research on contemporary body art, mobile art, and new media art.
